Traffic management in place whilst Severn Trent Water carry out work on Roman Road in Shrewsbury is to be lifted at the weekend for the Bike4Life event.

The event on Sunday will see around 3,500 motorcyclists leave Meole Brace and travel along the A5, M54 and A41 to RAF Museum Cosford.

With bikers heading from all directions into Shrewsbury, Shropshire Council and Severn Trent Water agreed that in order to minimise any potential disruption on the day, the traffic management currently in place, which comprises of a one-way system (through traffic allowed to travel between Longden Road roundabout and Porthill roundabout N.W. bound but not vice-versa), to be lifted to allow two-way access on this stretch.

The lifting of the system will be temporary to accommodate the event and the road closure and diversion route will be reinstated again on Sunday evening.

The closure and diversion will be lifted at some point on Saturday afternoon to be replaced by two-way traffic lights to protect the works and then the closure reinstated on Sunday evening.

Motorists using the A5, M54 and A41 are also being advised to plan their journeys and allow extra time.

Motorcyclists participating in Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s sixth annual Bike4Life event will leave Meole Brace in Shrewsbury at 11.30am on Sunday and will ride to RAF Cosford via the A5, M54 and A41.

The 23 mile journey only takes around half an hour but, depending on the number of people participating, there could be delays and some congestion along this route.

The following closures will be in place during the event (approximately 11am – 1pm):
• The A5 eastbound between Dobbies roundabout and the M54, including the three roundabout entrances (Dobbies, Preston and Emstrey)
• The M54 entry slip roads at junctions 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
• The M54 westbound exit slip road at junction 3

Diversion routes will be clearly signposted.

Alexandra Brown, Emergency Planning Officer for Highways England, said: “Road users may experience some delays along these routes on Sunday morning, but these should ease fairly quickly. We advise drivers to plan their journeys ahead of time or to use alternative routes if possible around the middle of the day.”
