Witness the might of the Roman Army as it invades Wroxeter Roman City over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Tremble in the face of the world famous Ermine Street Guard as they set up camp in Wroxeter’s ancient grounds, and be transported back to an age of invading legions, cut throat centurions and the all-conquering Roman Empire.
The armoured ranks of the Ermine Street Guard will invade Wroxeter on Sunday 1 and Monday 2 May – almost 2,000 years since the Roman Conquest of Britain. The Guard will transport visitors back in time to ancient ‘Viroconium’, as Wroxeter was known to the Romans, as their colourful legion demonstrate the combat skills, battle tactics and artillery power which made the Roman army such a formidable fighting force.
Alongside enjoying displays of army tactics and skill, visitors will be able to explore the encampment and talk to the mighty imperial roman army about life on the road. Find out all about the food they ate, the way they wrote, and the tools they used – all in this iconic Roman setting.
Budding young centurions will be spoilt for choice with fun activities throughout the day. They can learn how to defend their empire with battle drills, find out about the thrills and spills of a Roman life with storytelling, and sign up to Gladiator school for a taste of life in the amphitheatre.
“The Ermine Street Guard are the country’s leading Roman re-enactment group – and where could be better to see them than at one of Roman Britain’s greatest cities?!” comments Event Manager Jenny Davie, “Dressed head to toe in authentic armour, and armed ready for battle, the Guard will put on a brilliant display. I can’t wait to see them walking through the grounds of ancient Viroconium – it’s going to be a breath-taking, and unforgettable, way to experience first-hand the thrill of a Roman invasion.”
Viroconium was the fourth largest city in Roman Britain. It began as a legionary fortress and later developed into a thriving civilian city. The remains of the 2nd century municipal baths, and the huge wall dividing them from the exercise hall can still be seen today, alongside the recreated Roman Town House which was constructed using authentic Roman techniques.
The Ermine Street Guard can be seen in ‘Romans Invade!’ at Wroxeter Roman City on Sunday 1 and Monday 2 May. Tickets are £19.00 for a family, £7.30 for adults, and £4.40 for children. Reduced prices apply for English Heritage members.
