Mr John Frankland Abbott, aged 71, of Weston, near Whitchurch was walking beside the A49 at Prees Green, near Whitchurch when in collision with a red Suzuki Swift at around 11.40am on Saturday.

He was taken by air ambulance to the University Hospital North Staffordshire where he died a short time later.

Police are anxious to hear from anyone who saw the collision or the circumstances leading up to it.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We would like anyone who might have seen the pedestrian in the minutes leading up to the collision or indeed, the vehicle involved being driven immediately beforehand, to contact Whitchurch police station on 0300-333-3000.”

The Suzuki was being driven by a woman northbound. She was slightly hurt and suffered from shock.

The coroner for Mid and North Shropshire Mr John Ellery has been informed and a post mortem and inquest opening will be held in due course.
