Police are appealing for witness to a racially aggravated assault that occurred outside the Buttermarket in Shrewsbury last month.

The assault happened around 2:15am on Howard Street on Sunday 15 February when a 34-year-old man from Shrewsbury was assaulted.

The victim, a taxi driver, was in his taxi when he was approached by an unknown man asking if he could get in the taxi and wait for his friends. The man got into the taxi but was asked to leave after a few minutes when the driver could wait no longer, he then became aggressive with the taxi driver using racial slurs.

Both men got out of the taxi and the suspect punched the taxi driver in the face, causing minor injuries. The suspect then ran off towards Shrewsbury town centre.

The suspect is described as white, aged around 20 with blue eyes and dark hair that was shaved around the sides and longer on top. He is described as around 6ft tall and of an athletic build.

Police have released CCTV from around the time of the incident of a man they are keen to speak to in relation to the assault.

Anyone who recognises the man pictured is urged to call police on 101 quoting incident number 88s of 15 February. Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or via their website crimestoppers.org.uk
